English Qaballa (EQ) is a system of Hermetic Qabalah, supported by a system of arithmancy that interprets the letters of the English alphabet via an assigned set of values, discovered by James Lees in 1976. It is the result of an intent to understand, interpret, and elaborate on the mysteries of Aleister Crowley's received text, Liber AL vel Legis, the Book of the Law, one such mystery entailed Ordeal X.
It was through the efforts of English Qaballist that an “an initiatory theory and practice was developed over a forty-year period of research experiment by the first and second generation of EQ magicians.” Cath Thompson writes in HOUSE 418, “An initiatory ritual reinforces what magical ability the candidate already possesses, and stabilised the personality within the context of the magical universe delineated by the particular system of ritual employed. […] Astrology provides a celestial context which anchors ritual and operator in real observable space-time by the intentional correlation of events. Cath Thompson is an English Qaballist and Stellar Magickian of forty years experience; in the 1970s she was the youngest initiated member of James Lees’ O.’.A.’.A.’.. Cath was the archivist of the group’s many-layered occult investigations, including their pioneering research and development of the English Qaballa, which Lees discovered in 1976, and the application of astrological principles to ceremonial magick—groundbreaking work to which she has contributed in no small measure—involving the first experiments with timing initiatory rituals to the Venus-Sun conjunctions. She is the author of seven books on English Qaballa, including The Magickal Language of the Book of the Law: An English Qaballa Primer, A Handbook of Stellar Magick, HOUSE 418: The Circle Squared, and The Mystery of the Letters, all published by Hadean Press.
