Which Face of Hermes is appropriate for which kind of magic?

Gary’s very latest material involves differentiating the visible phases within Mercury's  synodic cycle according to various dimensions of Mercury's mythic persona. This is detailed in the second volume of his series, Hermetica Triptycha.

Herein, the Solar or Synodic cycle of Mercury is divided into six discrete phases, based on the visual phenomenology. From this we develop and explore Six Mythic Faces to match the Six Sky Phases: Trickster, Messenger, Guardian, Philosopher, Sage, and Psychopomp.

We begin by examining the Mythology of Hermes from a Cosmological perspective, placing it within the overall story of the Olympic Pantheon's emergence. From there we differentiate between the various complex and multifaceted roles Hermes plays within the many mythic fragments. Finally, we will look to the astronomy of Mercury's synodic or Solar cycle for parallels and correspondences between the phases and faces of Mercury.

Since each of these phases corresponds to a distinct mythic character and also represents a stage in an evolutionary journey, it makes sense to contemplate what part of the cycle we’re invoking when performing talismanic elections for Mercury.
